Something Special: Makaton   Cbeebies  BBC

The sign and symbols you will have seen Justin and some of the children using in the Something Special Programmes are from Makaton.

Makaton is a communication programme, specially designed to help children and adults who may have communication and learning difficulties to better understand our speech and develop their own communication skills.

The signs are from British Sign Language (BSL) the natural language of the Deaf Community in the UK. When signs are used with Makaton they are used in the order of spoken English to enable us to sign and speak at the same time.

The symbols have been especially designed for Makaton.

Combining signs and symbols with speech has been shown to be extremely effective for thousands of children and adults. Makaton is used extensively all over the UK in pre-schools, nurseries, schools, colleges, centres and clinics by parents and carers, teachers, lecturers, Speech and Language Therapists and many others.

The signs and symbols are also increasingly being used in the community by the public to help children and adults who use Makaton to participate more fully in society. Makaton has also been adapted for use in over 50 other countries.

The Makaton Vocabulary Development Project (MVDP) is a Charitable Trust. It provides information and training through a network of Makaton Tutors all over the UK. There are a wide variety of resource materials to help support parents, carers and professionals when learning to sign and use the symbols. These include Books of Signs and Symbols, Videos of Signs, Nursery Rhymes Video, Training Packs for Parent and Carers, CD Roms of Signs and Symbols and lots more.
